Remembrance Day 2020

This Sunday is Remembrance Sunday, this year will be unlike others as we mark the day during the Coronavirus pandemic and, from Thursday, a second lockdown. In spite of this we believe that not observing this day is not an option and therefore Chilcompton will remember those people from our village who made the ultimate sacrifice in the two World Wars, but this year it will be different.

As is traditional in our village we will host a service on Sunday at 15.00, this will see a limited attendance of the Chairman of the Parish Council and Chilcompton Vicar Ester, however this year we don’t want you to attend. Instead we will broadcast the event live via Zoom, we will publish a link where you simply log on, the link will be “live” from 14.45 on Sunday, giving everyone a chance to log in in plenty of time. This link will be published here after Thursday. Please ca you switch your web cameras off when you join and mute your microphones to minimise background noise so everyone can hear the service.

We have attached the order of service, so you will be able to follow the service as it happens. The Chairman of the Parish Council will lay a wreath on behalf of the village. If you want to lay your own tributes we will tie string discretely around the base of the cenotaph with bulldog clips threaded on; you can then leave your tributes at other times, securing them to a clip so they do not blow away.

We know this is not the way any of wish to mark the event, however we have to be mindful of the health and safety of everyone and this virtual method will allow everyone to take part in the service and remain safe in their homes. Please do not come to the war memorial between 14.50 and 15.20 on Sunday. I hope you will be able to join us virtually as we honour those who died.

We meet in the presence of God. We commit ourselves to work in penitence and faith for reconciliation between the nations, that all people may, together, live in freedom, justice and peace.

We pray for all who in bereavement, disability and pain continue to suffer the consequences offighting and terror. We remember with thanksgiving and sorrow those whose lives, in world wars and conflicts past and present, have been given and taken away.

Ever-living God we remember those whom you have gathered from the storm of war into the peace of your presence; may that same peace calm our fears, bring justice to all peoples and establish harmony among the nations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
