Bus Service Cancellation

Chilcompton Parish Council is deeply concerned about the recent announcement to cease the 173 bus service that runs through the village. We believe that this will have a very detrimental impact on village residents. We will be raising objections to First Bus and Somerset County Council. We also intend to engage our local Member of Parliament. We encourage all concerned village residents to urgently take similar actions. For your information, we have attached a draft of the letter we intend to send to these agencies and people. Please feel free to use any of the content of it you wish, to help create you own letters. Contact information is included at the end of this memo. We recommend that all the people and agencies listed are copied on objections.

Traffic sub-committee volunteers

Many village residents are deeply concerned about local traffic, especially when it comes to speeding vehicles and other road disciplines. To try to help address some of the concerns, the Parish Council is looking to expand the Traffic sub-committee. Participation in the group will not require that you become  a Parish Councillor or take on any other duties. Nor will membership of the group require anyone to participate in the valuable work that the SpeedWatch group does.

The objectives of the group and timing of meetings are yet to be decided but if you feel you could actively contribute  please contact the Parish Clerk. When we have identified additional volunteers we will arrange a meeting to discuss the way forward.

Broadway Housing Development

Leaflets have been distributed in the village regarding a proposed development of 49 houses off Broadway, across from the top of Parsonage Lane. Included in the leaflet is reference to a survey of people’s opinions regarding this proposed development. While responding to this survey is of course a personal choice, formal comments or objections will still need to be made by individuals to Mendip District Council when a planning application by the developer has been made.

Could you manage an email list?

The Campaign Against Rural Over-development (CARO) organisation needs someone to manage their email distribution list. It’s not an onerous task. There are around 120 people on the list and the role is simply to add and remove people and send out occasional items which will be provided. There is no writing of documents involved or meetings to attend. If you feel you could contribute to village life by taking on this task please contact Pete on 07876 204964.

Ukraine £1,000 donation

Chilcompton Parish Council stands with the people of Ukraine

Chilcompton Parish Council has authorised a donation of £1,000 to be made for humanitarian purposes to help refugees fleeing Ukraine. The donation which was agreed unanimously by those attending the meeting is being made to DEC which is described later in this news post. Mendip District Council has made a statement on the invasion of Ukraine. The statement can be found here. The Parish Council fully supports the statement.

The statement in the link includes sites that are accepting donations to support Ukrainians affected by the war. In addition to those sites, the UK Government also recommends donating on this website https://www.dec.org.uk . This is an umbrella site for many well known and reputable charities. More than twenty million pounds of donations made to this site were matched by the UK Government. This is the group that the donation authorised by the parish council was made to.

If you choose to donate on any site, please remember to select Gift Aid if it is appropriate to your circumstances.
