Vacancy for a Parish Councillor
/in News/by Pete SinclairThere is currently a vacancy for a Parish Councillor. Are you interested but unsure what the role of a Parish Councillor is? Perhaps the following lists of dos and don’t may help explain:
What a Parish Councillor does:
- Joins a very diverse group of local residents
- Contributes their thoughts on how local matters should be run
- Contributes new ideas for the village and influences discussions as to what matters to village residents of all age groups
- Attends perhaps 2-3 hours of meetings per month, without getting any mandatory “homework”
- Helps council to prioritise what’s important to the village
- May get community activities to add to their CV or Resume – popular with employers
- Gets opportunities to gain experiences in areas such as community support, environment, IT and local finances
What a Parish Councillor does not do
- Does not have to make any major prepared speeches to groups of people, although participation in discussions is encouraged if and when comfortable for the individual to do so
- Get involved in political discussions in any way while on council business
- Be required to perform other volunteer activities unless they choose to
- Get involved in arguments!

Reporting potholes and other repairs

Somerset Council is implementing changes for reporting to our highways service. Fix My Street will no longer be an access point for reporting issues. Instead, the preferred method is to use Somerset Council’s online reporting portal:
https://www.somerset.gov.uk/roads-travel-and-parking/report-a-problem-on-the-road/
This ensures issues like potholes, blocked drains, and overgrown vegetation are logged accurately, tracked, and quickly addressed. When reports are submitted through this portal or the call centre, they are automatically assigned to the correct team, and enquirers receive updates via reference numbers.
Councillors and the public are asked to no longer use Fix My Street or email reports for highways.
This new process aims to streamline issue reporting, reduce unnecessary communication and duplication, and ensure quick resolution of highway defects.

Annual Parish Meeting
/in News/by Pete SinclairThe Annual Parish Meeting will take place in the Village Hall at 7:30 pm on April 15. All villagers are welcome to attend.
Plan to build up to 66 houses in Chilcompton
/in News/by Pete SinclairAn application has been made to build up to 66 new houses on land off Broadway. The planning application number is 2024/2281/OUT. This application will be discussed at the Parish Council Planning Meeting to be held on 22 January at 7:30 in the village hall. That meeting is open to the public and comments on the application are invited.
Please note that public comments will only be recorded as being part of the formal planning process if they are submitted on the Planning Website or in writing to Somerset. Comments made at the meeting or on social media platforms are not recored as being formal and will not be considered by the planning authorities as part of the application.
